In this photo, I’m the old guy. I consider myself to be one of the most fortunate men alive. My arm is around my wonderful wife. We met on a blind date back in 1985. I fell in love immediately. It took her a while to warm up to me. We’ve been married 35 years now, and she is starting to come around. I often say that most everything good in my life is because of her. Together we have had five wonderful children, so now we have two beautiful daughters and three beautiful daughters-in-law. Each one is fun to be around and very talented in their areas of interest. As I said, I consider myself to be one of the most fortunate men alive.
The gorgeous bride in the picture is our youngest son’s wife. They were friends all throughout high school and started dating just before they went away to separate colleges. They dated all throughout college and got married in the June after their graduation. The family to the far left is our oldest daughter and our first son-in-law. In case you can’t tell, they have four children and their fifth one is eight days away from being born. Our oldest son is holding the six-month-old. He and his wife were friends throughout high school and college and starting dating after college. They were married at the same venue where this picture was taken about six years previously. The guy with the long hair is our third born. He and his wife met after college and were married in a stunningly beautiful ceremony near her hometown in Connecticut. To the far right is our daughter and second son-in-law. He was friends with our daughter’s brother until one day, they each saw each other in a new light. They had a very memorable family wedding during COVID that was as beautiful as it was intimate.
I think if you were to ask everyone what our best family vacation was, I think we would all say the same thing; It was the week we biked from our house near Washington, DC to Pittsburgh, PA. They had just opened a bike trail that went the entire distance. For half of it, it ran along the picturesque Potomac River, and after Cumberland, MD it went up and over the Eastern Continental Divide. When my wife heard about this trail, she suggested that we give it a try, so I went out and bought seven identical bikes. As we headed out, I wasn’t sure if we could make it to Pittsburgh, but I figured that at the very least it would be a week of adventure that we would share together. I think our oldest was 21 and our youngest was 10. Sure enough, we rolled into Pittsburgh six days after we started. We think we may have seen an actual liger in the dark one night after a long day on the trail. (Hat tip to Napoleon Dynamite) It almost knocked our son off his bike.
When I graduated from college in 1984, I started a business that is surprisingly still going to this day. I say “surprisingly” because I was an English lit major in college and knew nothing about running a business. If I had known more, I probably wouldn’t have started to begin with, so I guess it turned out to be a good thing that I majored in English. The company employs 70 people today. To utilize my major and combine it with my career, at some point I should write a book on what not to do when you start a business and how you can still survive. It probably wouldn’t make the NY Times Bestseller list. In the meantime, I started this web site to write about another passion of mine; the Bible.
I have had no formal training in the Bible. What I did have was a faithful dad who passed on a legacy of reading God’s Word daily. My dad went to be with his Lord a few years ago, and I still miss him. I think of him from time to time when I get up early each day to have a cup of coffee and read six pages of my King James Version. That is a daily discipline that he practiced his entire adult life, and it looks as though I will follow in his footsteps. When I read the Bible along with the notes that I have scribbled in the margins from years gone by, I have started to gain some insights. It is those insights that I will share on this web site.
I welcome your comments and emails.
